Who Killed Dana Bala? – 7

WKDB EPISODES

WHILE Fr. Chrys was listening with horrified stupefaction to Sister Clara’s narration, downtown at the teaching hospital CSP Charles Kanayo was with Dr Chikelu, the Pathologist.

Charles stood beside the autopsy table and Dana’s lifeless body was across the waist-high aluminium fixture. There was a plastic brisk-like appliance under her back which made her chest to protrude upwards.

Dr Chikelu’s gloved hands moved over the body as he spoke. “I’ll be opening her up in a matter of minutes to begin the toxicology tests.”

“Right.” Charles nodded. Though he’d been dealing with dead bodies all through his career, he’d never managed to get over his aversion for seeing bodies lying across the autopsy table. “So, what is your verdict so far? You think she could have been murdered?”

Fr. Chrys was not having a good day at all. Not only had he been treated to another bone-chilling confession from Veronica and Justina, he’d also gotten a call from Charles that the autopsy investigations were still inconclusive.

They haven’t found any incriminating evidence that might make the cause of death anything but natural. But as he’d pointed out, the results for the tests of poison weren’t yet out, so until they were, nothing could be certain.

Nothing could be certain except that a teenage girl was dead and her body was being subjected to scientific pokes and prods instead of being committed back to Mother Earth. Restless, Fr. Chrys sprang off his chair and started to pace the small office.

This was what frustrated him most about the Nigerian Police and their ill-equipped investigation system and laboratories. Everything was done at such a snail pace as if they had all the time in the world and worse still, the results were most often doubtful. It’s been forty-eight hours for God’s sakes since her death and all he was getting were platitudes instead of answers, or at least a body to bury.

He let out an explicit curse, then exhaled, stopped his prancing and leaned his back against the door. Willing himself to relax, he made the sign of the cross and silently implored God’s forgiveness for the swear word and his uncharacteristic temper.

JUSTINA lay crunched on the floor, her back against the door, knees lifted up to her chin and cradled by her hands as wild thoughts raced through her mind.

Veronica’s muffled whines came from the bed but her frenzied mind denied the possibility of them having been responsible for Dana’s death. No, they hadn’t killed her. She must have died on her own. Something else must have killed her, not their harmless attack.

It had only been a revenge plot to teach the damned boyfriend-snatching witch a lesson. Swallowing hard, she turned to look at Veronica. The pure anguish on the other girl’s face struck at her and sent images of the last time they had both seen Dana alive tumbling into her mind like a flood of turbulent windy water.

JUSTINA was sitting on top the ledge that was attached to the large bungalow-like building. Though Veronica was reading aloud in her usual stuttering manner, she wasn’t really listening to her. Although a word or two slipped through her subconscious mind every now and then, the conscious part of her mind swirled with rage and pain as she thought over her earlier discussion with Anthony.

Still messed up schedule

I was just going to continue being absent with no explanations until when I can fully return. But it makes me feel irresponsible if I don’t offer excuses, and explanations, especially when I can.

First, I do want to apologise that things are not yet back on schedule here on the blog. I’d wanted them to be by last week, or at the latest, this week. But I discovered I needed to round off a personal project, actually two personal projects, before getting back to full-time blogging.

I am editing, still editing, an old story that I want published for paid reading and I had hoped that by now it would be out and sales ongoing. Unfortunately, I couldn’t meet my own deadline. No surprise there, right? But it does surprise and embarrass me when that happens.

So, because I have lapsed, and terribly so, behind schedule on the publishing of this story, I’ve decided, and really since last week, to take all the time I need off to edit carefully and publish before returning to the blog. I also have a pending edit for a friend of mine which I should have finished by now and so, will get through it before I get back here. Therefore, there are two works to be edited and then published before the possibility of a return would be considered.

This is truly important, very much so, because I sustain this blog via my earnings from sales of my eBooks. This blog is not yet self-sufficient and won’t survive if I don’t write, edit and publish. So, I need to do this.

I’m not going to pretend to give a time frame and then fail on it. Not this time. There are too many constraints, too many unforeseen circumstances, arising from varied angles, so it’s going to be one step at a time. Also, after I’m done publishing, I will take the time to completely write all remaining chapters of One More Time… And Forever before I begin posting. I consider this as only fair as I have over-delayed the story already. There would be no point coming back and making you guys go through a weekly posting after waiting so long. Best if it’s a daily post after my return. It will make up for my absence and make things more interesting for you.

So, I ask that we all stay calm and be patient, things will soon revert to its normal course. Hopefully.

CHIEF Superintendent Charles Kanayo has just left the Imo State University Teaching Hospital where he’d gone to speak with the Pathologist attached to the State Police command, Dr. Denis Chikelu, on the autopsy findings so far in the Dana Bala case.

Dr. Chikelu hadn’t had much for him, and he hadn’t really expected much either, it had barely been twenty four hours since the body had been deposited by his team at the hospital. Well, however little the information he had, he wanted to update Fr. Chrys on them. So, slipping out his phone as the Police Sergeant on the driver’s seat of the Hilux van sped through the light traffic towards their Station, he dialled the Priest’s number.

“Good morning, Father.” He greeted once the call was picked.

“Good afternoon, Charles, how are you?” Fr. Chrys responded. “Are you on the road?” He asked, hearing the noisy static from the other end.

Charles pushed off the file he had on his laps onto the seat and tried to stretch forward his legs. “As a matter of fact I am, Father. Actually I’m on my way back from the Teaching hospital; had gone over to speak with our Pathologist there.”

CHAPTER ELEVEN

He hated when he woke up with indistinct throbs on his temple that were nothing short of foretelling signs of impending headaches, a bout of fever, or worse, malaria.

He couldn’t stand being sick and mostly because he couldn’t stand taking medications. Or worse, injections. And he’d be darned if he was going to allow anything that might bring about any of those sneak in, Chima decided and spent most of the day in bed, resting his body, mind and spirit, and keeping sickness at bay.

By the time he was all set for his movie date with Tamara, he felt better and considering the battle against any incoming sickness won, he was all cheer and high spirit.

Well, who knew playing big brother and taking your sister to the movies could be this entertaining? He thought with unrestrained amusement, listening to Tamara chat vibrantly and just about any subject. She wanted to become a caterer, it seemed. Or a restaurant owner. Or maybe both. She wasn’t yet decided but she loved cooking, baking, doing anything that meant food and kitchen, and that was her focus in life.

She asked his opinion. And that was another spot of surprise and pleasure, that she wanted to know what he thought of her career choice. That she would listen attentively and with plain sombreness when he gave it. And that she would make it a point to brag to her friend, Becca, when she’d called that she was going to the movie with her big brother.

FR. Chrys was staring at the boy with a stupefied expression on his face. When Cyprian made a nervous sound by clearing his throat, he jerked a bit, recollected what they were doing—having a confession.

“Please go on.” He managed to say.

Cyprian bent his head once more and started to speak…

AFTER Dana had so carelessly announced to the other boys that they were… doing it and they’d both looked at him like the worst sinner on earth, he’d left them and went back to his room, pacing, fuming and swearing. And crying in between.

Anthony had looked angry.  No, he’d looked disappointed.

Hurt and wounded at the disappointment he’d seen in Anthony’s eyes, Cyprian marched to his own bed and dropped into it. The spring underneath squeaked but he hardly paid attention. Of course Anthony was disappointed and that was because in spite of all his admonitions and counsel, he’d gone right ahead and did the one thing he always warned him not to do—broken the sixth commandment.
